Dr. Nguyen provides care to a clinic with a large number of Asian Americans and other minorities. He is also the Co-Director of the Vietnamese Community Health Promotion Project at UCSF, a community-academic research organization working in the Asian communities since 1986. Dr. Nguyen’s research focuses on addressing health disparities among minority populations, particularly Asian American communities, through community involvement in research and training. His work included a community-based participatory research project to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese American women, an intervention funded by ACS to increase colorectal cancer screening among Vietnamese and Latino patients, a study of lay health worker outreach funded by the NCI to promote colorectal cancer screening among Chinese Americans. He currently leads a project funded by the NCI to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a media campaign to promote hepatitis B screening among Vietnamese Americans. Dr. Nguyen is the Deputy Principal Investigator of the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research, and Training (AANCART), a national network funded by the NCI to address cancer disparities through research, community involvement, and capacity building. He is Chair of the Asian American Pacific Islander Team of ACS-California.
