Digital Storytelling

In April 2012, nine colorectal cancer survivors recorded their stories during a three-day workshop at the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, CA.  The nine participants represented four different counties in California (Sacramento, San Francisco, Orange, and Solano) and a wide variety of experiences with colorectal cancer.  However, all participants shared a similar goal: to spread the word that colorectal cancer is Preventable, Treatable, and Beatable!

You can watch their stories here.

The CRC Digital Storytelling Project is a collaborative effort of the California Dialogue on Cancer (CDOC), California Colorectal Cancer Coalition (C4), and California Colon Cancer Control Program (CCCCP).  The purpose of the CRC Digital Storytelling Project is to record and disseminate the stories of survivors, providers, and caregivers affected by colorectal cancer.  The project has the following goals:

  1. Personal reflection and growth: the digital storytelling workshops will provide a safe, supportive environment in which participants are able to reflect on their experiences and receive support and healing from other participants;

  2. Education, outreach, and awareness:  the stories produced in the CRC Digital Storytelling workshop will be used as tools for education, training, and awareness-raising across multiple sectors and disciplines

  3. Movement and community building: the digital stories will be used as an emotional piece or “call to action”, giving voice to affected individuals and communities and generating momentum in the fight against colorectal cancer;

  4. Policy advocacy: the digital stories will be used to educate legislators and policy makers about colorectal cancer and the importance of promoting accessible and affordable screening and treatment
